Following a quick coffee break in the seaside town of Port Wakefield, you’ll head to Southern Flinders Ranges for a morning trek at Alligator Gorge. This serves as a great introduction to the trip, taking place in Mount Remarkable National Park. Post-lunch, take a brief walk around Quorn, a town known for its Pichi Richi Railway. Next, reach Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park for a hike at Arkaroo Rock, a site of cultural significance to the Adnyamathanha community. Explore rock art depicting the Yura Muda (creation myths) of Ikara (also known as Wilpena Pound). Later in the day, partake in a Welcome to Country ceremony in the Adnyamathanha language at Wilpena Pound Resort. After feeling in tune with the land and its history, head to Skytrek Willow Springs Station. This 70,000-acre active sheep ranch offers remote bush camping and serves as our hub for exploring the Flinders Ranges. The Flinders Ranges boast fossils that are so ancient, they prompted geologists to reframe Earth’s geological timeline, identifying a fresh era known as the Ediacaran period. After our morning meal, we will delve deeper into this incredible park with a hike that takes us through towering river red gums and by waterholes, culminating in spectacular views. Conservation is integral to our ethos; hence, we’ll spend some time today with a Park Ranger to understand the park’s preservation efforts and maybe even participate in some impactful conservation tasks. Post-lunch, embark on a scenic drive through Brachina Gorge. Round off the day with a drink at a traditional country pub before heading back to camp for dinner. Estimated driving time today is roughly 3 hours.

After your meal, head over to the main highlight of the town, Umoona Opal Mine & Museum. Engage in ‘noodling’ or gem hunting and partake in an opal-cutting tutorial.
